How to Make Dragon Eggs

how to make dragon eggs

Hi, I’m Stephen and I like to make cardboard costumes and props.

Today, I’m making dragon eggs from Game of Thrones!

I love these eggs. They look legit and I’m really hoping that somehow they’ll hatch actual dragons!

As always, I included a link to the free template. Just make sure you have a stack of empty cereal boxes if you want to make them.

Let’s get to it!

Steps to Make Dragon Eggs:

  1. Print the template.
  2. Base:
    1. Cut the big pieces that look like flowers out of the template and tape onto cereal box cardboard.
    2. Cut inside lines first and then the ends.
    3. Repeat.
    4. Push and pinch the “petals” together. Secure with tape.
    5. Tape both halves together.
  3. Scales:
    1. Tape page onto cereal box cardboard.
    2. Cut out all of the scales.
    3. You will likely need to repeat this process until you used about 1.5 full cereal boxes to make scales.
    4. Hot glue scales onto the Base in an alternating pattern. Leave about ½ to 1 inch of the bottom exposed.
  4. Add Texture:
    1. Smear with joint compound.
    2. On the exposed bottom, dab with a paper towel so it looks rough.
    3. Once completely dry, cover the entire egg in white glue.
  5. Paint:
    1. Red Egg:
      1. Base coat: black and yellow
      2. Add layers of red, copper, and yellow until you are happy with it.
      3. Dry brush with copper.
    2. White Egg:
      1. Base coat: white and tan
      2. Add layers of white and tan until it looks off-white and creamy colored.
      3. Dry brush with white.
      4. Dry brush with gold.
    3. Green Egg:
      1. Base coat: black and yellow
      2. Add layers of green, dark green, and yellow until you are happy with it.
      3. Tip: mix in a tiny bit of red to help mute the brightness of the green.
  6. Enjoy!
